Trail Blazers begin search for a center after Jeff Pendergraph is lost for
the season with a torn ACL
The Trail Blazers are searching for a center after learning backup center
Jeff Pendergraph has torn the ACL in his right knee and will be out for the
season.

General manager Rich Cho on Friday said he will first take a short-term
approach and sign a player by early next week. As the Oct. 26 season opener
nears, he said he will gauge the progress of rehabilitating centers Greg Oden
and Joel Przybilla, and decide whether the Blazers need to sign a center for
the regular season roster. If Cho does decide to sign a center for the
regular season, he will have to release one of his current players, most
likely Pendergraph.

“We’re going to bring in another big on a training camp contract and go
from there,’’ Cho said.
Cho said he has a short list of players, some of whom are playing overseas
and some of whom are on NBA training camp rosters, but may be cut soon.

Pendergraph injured his knee Thursday night in Utah with 10:48 left in the
second quarter of an exhibition game against the Jazz. He was guarding center
Kyrylo Fesenko, who drove left and scored on Pendergraph while being fouled.
Pendergraph immediately crumpled to the court, holding his right knee with
both hands.

With Oden and Przybilla rehabilitating knee injuries from last season and not
scheduled to return by the start of the season, Pendergraph was set to be the
Blazers’ backup center.

Now, the Blazers have one healthy center, veteran Marcus Camby, and one other
player over 6-foot-10, LaMarcus Aldridge. Camby has been limited in the
preseason because of a strained groin.

Przybilla on Thursday said he hopes to return to practice in two weeks, and
Oden said he continues to make progress on a daily basis. That leaves Cho and
coach Nate McMillan guessing at the future.

“It puts a lot of pressure on our guys to have to carry that load, but it
also puts a lot of pressure on Rich to just go out and make a decision based
on ... I mean, we do need to fill that spot but with who and what kind of
player?" McMillan said. "It’s an awkward position and an adjustment we have
to make. Because Greg and Joel are making progress, and they are getting
better each day and could be close to returning.’’

In the meantime, McMillan will operate with the idea that Aldridge will be
the regular season backup center and Dante Cunningham the power forward when
Aldridge slides over.

Tonight, in the third of seven preseason games, McMillan said his starting
lineup will be Andre Miller, Nicolas Batum, Cunningham and Aldridge. He said
he hadn’t decided on his shooting guard, but that it would either be Jerryd
Bayless or rookie Elliot Williams.

McMillan said Camby and Brandon Roy will not play Friday, and that Miller and
Aldridge will play sparse minutes.
“We just want to get out of this preseason,’’ McMillan said.

Cho said he expects to have a center into Portland by early next week,
possibly in time for Monday’s exhibition against Utah at Memorial Coliseum.
Cho 說他會儘快在下星期找到中鋒 可能是在下星期一打猶他前(又是爵士..)
