"Jerryd did a good job for us, but we really feel like getting a great
asset —a New Orleans pick in the future — gives us a lot of options down
the road," said Blazers general manager Rich Cho, adding that Jerryd was
"very positive" and was "looking for more minutes."
The move most likely makes rookie Armon Johnson the backup point guard for
the Blazers. Johnson was impressive in the preseason, averaging 5.7 points
per game and scoring 14 points in a 17-minute stretch against Golden State.
Had he not made as much of an impact, would this trade still have gone down?
Said Cho: "It definitely helped that Armon played well."
Johnson said Saturday that he's "excited for Jerryd" and thinks this will
give him an opportunity to shine in another city. But asked if he thought
this decision reflected the quality of his preseason performance, Johnson
didn't give a firm nod.
"I'm hoping that's what that means, but I didn't really look at it that way,
" he said. "I looked at is an opportunity for any player to step in and show
what they can do. Luckily that time is for me."
"Yesterday I was thinking about Monday and getting my bags packed,"
Mills said Saturday. "Now? I don't know what now ... I can breathe a little
easier."
