Back in Rose Garden, Brandon Roy wishes he could play, but says, 'I'm still excited to be here' Roy:「事與願違未能上場,然而重回玫瑰花園依然令我激動」。 Former Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy was back in the Rose Garden on Saturday, his first trip into arena as a member of another team, the Minnesota Timberwolves. Before the game, he spoke to local reporters. A transcript (questions are edited for brevity and clarity): How do you feel about being back? “Excited. It doesn’t have the same energy as when I was playing, but I still was excited as we got close to the arena, just happy to be back pulling in here. I still wish I was able to play this game, but I’m still excited to be here and see the fans, and you guys [the media]. I haven’t seen you guys in a while.” Why did you decide to come? “I was on the road trip, and I’ve been workxing out, and me and DK (general manager David Kahn) thought it would be good to start traveling with the team again, just starting getting in that flow. Just being on the trip, I was happy to look at the schedule and see Portland was the last place we were going.” On continuing to play: “I’m still young. If I was to just stop playing basketball, I don’t know exactly what I would go into right away. I just say, why not? I still love to show up and practice and work out. If the time comes to stop playing, I’ ll know when the time comes.” Will you play again this season? “I think so. That’s my goal right now. I’m showing up every day and rehabbing, working out to get back on the court.” Concerns about long-term health? “There’s always that concern from the beginning of my career. But I’ve talked to two different doctors, and comparing all my MRIs from that last season in Portland, nothing’s gotten worse. Until somebody says, ‘Oh, it’s getting pretty bad, you should stop, …’ Who knows? I’ll go as long as I can. I’ll know when it’s pretty much over.” Happy to be back? “I really wish I could’ve played tonight. It’s difficult to watch our team pretty much play in any game, especially with all the injuries. Tonight would ’ve been really special for me to come back here, to play here." Is your not playing tonight an indication of the shape you’re health is? “It’s still hard to play not just here in Portland, but in any game when you don’t feel like you’re as close to 100 percent as possible. I guess I would just say that I don’t feel as good to come out here and play in a game. Maybe I could have played tonight (but) I haven’t been practicing enough or in basketball shape to go out there. Maybe I’d injure something else just trying to play.” How is your health? “I’m doing good. I’ve been doing good for a few weeks now without any setbacks. I’m closer to getting back out there on the court. And talking to Kevin (Love, also injured) and Chase (Budinger) and those guys, once they’re healthy, and I’ll be that much closer, we can give ourselves a good look at what this team could’ve been with all the guys healthy.” What are your memories of this building? “I still have my house here. So just going back home brings back a lot of memories of nights just going back home after some really special nights here in the Rose Garden. I have so many memories from my very first year all the way up to my last. I forget things that people remind me about – ‘That was a big moment.’ That’s what you want when you come into this league, is to create memories, and I have a lot of special ones here, especially in this building." How many years will you play? “I’m not sure. My body has a lot to say about that. I think at the end of the year, I’ll do some reflecting on how this season went, and if I want to continue. But I made that commitment at the beginning of the year that I’m going to stick with this season, no matter what the ups and downs. At the end of the year, I’ll say, OK, let’s reflect on things and do I still want to continue to go forward. So I’m not going to make that decision now. I know maybe people want me to, but I’m going to wait. I made a commitment, and I’ m going to stick it out. What are your impressions of Damian Lillard? “He’s a good player. Being in Minnesota I don’t get to watch as many Portland games, but the games I’ve watched, he’s a really tough player. I didn’t know he could shoot the ball that good. I think he’s a really good three-point shooter and he’s just tough. I watch him out there on the court and I think the way ... you can tell he makes big shots, timely shots. I think he’s going to be a special player.” Do you see any similarities to you? “Yeah, he’s solid. I’ve never really been one to compare guys to myself, but I see a lot of Chauncey Billups in him. I think Chauncey wasn’t at that level so early, but you could see those similarities. He just comes down and he makes timely baskets and just playing against guys like Chauncey, that’s what they did. He’s going to be a really good player in this league.” What’s a satisfactory end to your career? What do you have to accomplish before it’s over? “Nothing. I’ve kind of jumped that hurdle. Just getting back to playing that first game of the season was great for me. And if I never play another game, I’ll be completely happy with my career. And that didn’t just come overnight. It took time to get to that point of peace. Now that I’m there, again, me just trying to play basketball, it’s not for anything other that I want to still try to continue. And I’m happy with how things are going now.” When did you get to that point of peace? “Sometime during training camp. My biggest thing was getting back to the league. When I got in training camp and we were just sitting at the training table and I’m just talking and I’m like, ‘Man, I’m back in the mix of things with the team again,’ it just felt good. It just felt right. So that was when I said, ‘No matter what happens this year, I’m going to be positive about it.’ And I think I’ve done that. Everybody that sees me says he’s still smiling. That’s what I want people to see. I don’t want people to see a frustrated person. I want them to see somebody that’s happy with how things are going.” Do you have any idea what kind of player you can get back to? “No. I don’t know. I’m not sure. I wouldn’t even know how to answer that. The biggest thing is, as long as I can play and not in too much pain, I’ll be happy with that.” Do you ever look back and wonder about you and LaMarcus Aldridge and Greg Oden and what could have been with that group? “I never really do it. But we’ll sit around and watch games and people will go, ‘Man, if you guys could have stayed healthy.’ Then they mention Greg and me and LaMarcus. We had a lot of young talented pieces. Some people say, ‘You guys could have been this or you could have been that.’ But ... unless you work and actually get that, then it’s just a what-if. If you think too hard on the what-ifs, you take too much credit from the teams that are actually going out and doing it. So my thing is, we had a fun moment. And maybe in one of my dreams I can dream about how good the team would have been if we could have just been healthy. It’s unfortunate, but time goes on and you’ve just got to move forward.”
