After more than ONE YEAR of consideration and hesitation, I've made a
life-changing decision: Instead of receiving a single Ph.D. degree in ecology
by the time I graduate in 2006, I'm going to get TWO Master's degrees when I
graduate in 2005: M.S. in ecology, and M.A. in Latin American and Caribbean
studies. In a total of three publications will be counted for both of my M.S.
and M.A. thesis (one submitted to Oikos already). I'll shift my research
emphasis and interests from pure tropical ecological studies to conservation,
restoration, and natural resources management in the tropics. I'll still be
going to Costa Rica in Jan. to say goodbye with my old plots, and very likely
Costa Rica again in the summer for a totally different job. I've gone through
ups and downs of emotional roller coaster rides these days: no regret of
leaving the Ph.D. behind but VERY sad to terminate the project; very
relieved and hopeful to the new big open road but quite uncertain about all
the new plans. Cheers, Ophelia
