Hi guys,
I'm in Central America again. This time is supposed to be my last field
season before I graduate, and may be my last visit in Costa Rica. This new
project involves a lot of travel and adventure in many rural areas in Costa
Rica, therefore my boyfriend (and forced-to-be vonlunteering assistant!) and
I brought a lot of important electronic devices and camping gear down. Soon as
we arrived we rented a car for the travel. However, when we went to the downtown
to search for some specialized gas cans, we parked the car in a public parking lot
in front of police, which later became a fatal mistake. We were away for only 30
min. on this crowded street on Sun. morning, but someone already broke in the rental
car, unlocked the door, and took out most important and expensive luggage away.
my laptop, all data, digital camera and fisheye lens, my new (noy even initialized
) GPS, our tent and a lot of camping gear were all gone! The police kept saying that
they were constantly watching but didn't see anyone suspicious there (of course!
they might involve in the robbery themselves), and there was no way totrack the
lost gear back. Unfortunately, because of our previous experiences in Latin America
went very well we never, and not even thought of, purchasing travel insurance.
Our loss in money (about USD$2500) therefore cannot be mitigated from insurance.
We had to continue the journey with the old-fasioned style. I'll post the details of the journey in the next
article. This project is by far the mos expensive (for what I lost!) and difficult,
and most exhausting one I've ever had. Just want to remind you guys, be
extremely careful when traveling, and always buy travel insurance. I realized
later on that a $70 insurance would have cover all I lost....
