Here's another example: I'm going to southern Peru this summer and for sure I'll visit Machu Picchu. There's only 2 ways to get there: by tain (3 hrs) or hike (3-4 days). There's only one company that operates the train, and the train ticket price has gone up like crazy every yr. There're no more cheap tickets for locals, only tickets for backpackers or visitors. The cheaptest train ticket is over USD $62 round-trip. My Peruvian friend used to pay $3 for the ticket! By hiking, it is required to pay for the trail fee and hire a guide. The total cost of guide, food, camping, trail fee, etc. together is over $100. Who gets all the money into their pockets? Of course NOT the local residents. And how much do those few people make out of tourists? The train reservation has to be made about at least 1-2 months in advance, otherwise there's no chance to get a ticket. This is how popular the site is and how the monopoly exploits ther site and locals.
