BVB icon voted top goalkeeper: Kicker magazine hails Weidenweller as "world
class"
[6.06.] Still waiting for a call-up to the national team, Roman Weidenfeller
has been dubbed "the world′s best non-international goalkeeper" by the
German media. The Dortmunder, who was the top-rated goalkeeper in the
Bundesliga in 2004 and 2004, is regarded as the most consistent performer in
Germany′s top tier for years. Now the BVB keeper has been voted best in his
position by German football magazine kicker which hails him as "world class"
in their annual "ranking of German football".

"Dortmund′s Weidenfeller got a remarkable average rating of 2.0 [in the
Champions League], something a Bundesliga goalkeeper has never been able to
achieve before in the second half of the season. Against Malaga and Real
Madrid, he frustrated the strikers to the point of despair and also confirmed
his great skills in one-on-one situations in the final against FC Bayern. The
majority of the editorial staff voted for Weidenfeller as the top ranked
player," kicker magazine explained their decision.
Former East-Germany goalkeeper René Müller noted in a column: "Roman
Weidenfeller is correctly ranked number one. He′s a consistent top-level
performer and Dortmund only reached the Champions League final because of his
outstanding performances. It′s ridiculous to criticise his footballing
skills as the main job of a goalkeeper remains to stop balls, and not treat
the ball in the box like a No. 10."
