Chinese Taipei
Despite basketball and baseball being the two most popular sports in the
country, it is perhaps rather surprising that Chinese Taipei have actually
had more international success in football. They finished third in their
first appearance at the Asian Cup back in 1960.
But it is with the future generation that the hopes of the Chinese Taipei
fans lie. The national team are no longer the cannon fodder for larger
continental rivals and the successful hosting of the FIFA Futsal World
Championships in 2004 have shown that football is on the up.
The players presently on the team that will feature in the Lion City Cup all
participated in the AFC U-16 Championship Qualifying Round in October 2007.
Unfortunately the side failed to qualify out of a tough group that also
included Korea and Thailand.
Expect the Chinese Taipei to play with a bit of Brazilian flair with their
entire backroom staff hailing from the country that has won the FIFA World
Cup five times.
