Reed Johnson was recently released by the Blue Jays and immediately signed by
the Chicago Cubs. I'm wondering why the Jays didn't look to trade him for
something, opting to just let him go for nothing.

The Blue Jays tried to trade Johnson, and indeed, that was the route the club
would have preferred to have gone. The issue was that teams still questioned
whether or not Johnson was completely recovered from the back injury he
suffered a year ago, and there was probably some unwillingness to take on the
$3.275 million salary he was owed.
