Animated band GORILLAZ are set to break more ground next year (07) - by writing
the music for a new opera named MONKEY JOURNEY TO THE WEST.
The CLINT EASTWOOD hitmakers will collaborate with leading German opera company
Staatsoper and Chinese opera director CHEN SHI-ZHENG. The work will be based
on 16th-century Chinese author WU CHENG'EN's works and chart the transformation
of a monkey into a human being. Staasoper conductor DANIEL BARENHBOIM hopes
the unlikely collaboration will inspire a younger audience to seek and appre-
ciate opera.
He says, "The lack of musical education means that music is in danger of gra-
dually losing its place in society."
