        Evolution在1997年發行，得到褒貶不一的評價，也僅售出兩百萬張，遠
    低於專輯II的一千兩百萬張及Cooleyhighharmony的九百萬。這張專輯裡只有
    一首Jimmy Jam與Terry Lewis譜寫的單曲"Four Seasons of Loneliness"拿
    下排行榜冠軍。第二支單曲、Babyface之作"A Song for Mama"(Babyface製作
    的電影Soul Food之主題曲)進到排行前十名，再之後的"Can't Let Her Go"則
    是成績相當不理想。
    在巡迴宣傳這張專輯時，Wanya Morris聲帶長出息肉，團員不得不將部份行程
    延期等待他康復。就在同一時間，Michael McCary被診斷出類風濕性關節炎，
    限制了他在現場表演的舞蹈動作；之後其餘三個成員只好讓McCary坐在凳子上
    ，以三個人完成所有的舞蹈演出。
