Braves placed RHP John Smoltz on the 15-day disabled list
with elbow tendinitis. The Braves did a good job of keeping
Smoltz's elbow problems quiet, but it was clear something
was wrong when he wasn't used at all against the Giants last
week. The plan is for Smoltz to completely rest for seven
days and then resume throwing with an eye toward returning
on Sept. 7. "I want to pitch in the postseason at my best,"
Smoltz said. "If this was a four-game lead, I wouldn't be
doing this. This is a luxury thing." Kent Mercker is probably
the favorite for saves while Smoltz is out. Ray King and
Kevin Gryboski are also possibilities, but Mercker is the
one to own.
