[情報] Braves discuss trade for Padres’Peavy

The Braves are trying to fill their biggest need by trading for San Diego
right-hander Jake Peavy, a top-level major league ace with a Cy Young award
and a Southern drawl to boot.

A person familiar with the talks said the Braves and Padres have discussed a
potential blockbuster trade that would send the Alabama native to Atlanta for
a package likely to include at least three highly-rated Braves prospects, or
a young player and prospects.

Peavy, 27, has an 82-62 record and 3.25 ERA in 199 starts for San Diego, with
a franchisjavascript:void(0)e-record 1,256 strikeouts in 1,261 innings.

The right-hander was a unanimous choice for the National League Cy Young in
2007 after leading the league in wins (19), ERA (2.24) and strikeouts (240 in
223-1/3 innings).

Peavy is under contract with guaranteed salaries of $11 million in 2009, $15
million in 2010, $16 million in 2011 and $17 million in 2012, plus a $22
million option for 2013 with a $4 million buyout.

He has a full no-trade clause, but Peavy has indicated to several friends and
his agent that he would waive that clause to come to the Braves, St. Louis or
Houston.

He’s made it clear he has a strong preference to remain in the National
League. Peavy calls former Padres (and Braves) pitcher Greg Maddux a mentor,
and Maddux said one of the smart things he did was spend his entire career in
the NL, away from the designated hitter.

Peavy’s contract is considered below free-agent market value for a pitcher
of his ilk. Still, Padres general manager Kevin Towers told reporters he
would listen to offers for Peavy after a 99-loss Padres season that has
Towers looking to acquire younger, cheaper talent.

Braves general manager Frank Wren would not comment on the Peavy situation or
confirm the Braves were pursuing him.

The person familiar with the talks said if Peavy is traded it could be as
soon as this week or as late as after the December winter meetings. Baseball’
s general managers meetings are Nov. 3-6 in Dana Point, Calif.

The Braves have missed the playoffs for three consecutive years, in large
part due to injuries that hobbled an aging pitching staff. Wren said the team
seeks to acquire two proven starting pitchers and a power-hitting outfielder
this winter.

The Braves are believed to have at least $40 million available for additions
in 2009, and Wren said the day after the 2008 season ended that the team
would use its assets however necessary to fill its primary needs, through
trade or free agency.

Those assets include plenty of prospects in the minor-league system, though
Wren said two weeks ago that he didn’t plan to trade the top-rated members
of what he called the “next wave” of talent the Braves hope will infuse the
club in coming years.

Five-tool outfielder Jason Heyward and 18-year-old pitcher Julio Teheran are
considered to be close to untouchable prospects by the Braves, and pitcher
Tommy Hanson and slugging first baseman Freddie Freeman aren’t far behind in
that regard.

The Braves would also like to keep centerfield prospects Jordan Schafer and
Gorkys Hernandez. It remains to be seen whether the Padres would deal Peavy
without getting at least one of those prospects.

其實我覺得可以換一個出去 ....

The Braves might try to pull off the deal with a package that includes one of
their current major league middle infielders and highly rated prospects such
as catcher Tyler Flowers and pitchers Charlie Morton and Kris Medlen.
