Team president John Schuerholz envisioned big things for the Braves in
2014 as he successfully planned for the team to build a new, taxpayer-
funded stadium in suburban Cobb County for the 2017 season while three
men identified with the Braves—former manager Bobby Cox and aces Tom
Glavine and Greg Maddux—were inducted into the Hall of Fame.
It turned into a nightmare, however, and Schuerholz is determined not
to repeat it. One year after winning the National League East by 10
games with a 96-66 record, the Braves fell to 79-83 and 17 games behind
the first-place Nationals and tied for second with the Mets.
Schuerholz responded by taking a wrecking ball to the front office in
late September and October, reiterating all the while that the farm system
must be the lifeblood of the organization. And while it is unlikely that
the minor league system will generate the same type of productivity it did
in the late 1980s and ’90s, Schuerholz is determined to put forth the effort
to make that scenario a reality.
Every new hire brings with him a deep commitment to building from within,
beginning with president of baseball operations John Hart, who as general
manager of the Indians guided them to two World Series appearances in the
mid-90s. Hart's new special assistants to the GM include former Yankees
scouting guru Gordon Blakeley and prodigal son Roy Clark, who guided the
Braves'scouting efforts for nearly a decade in the 2000s before stints with
the Nationals and Dodgers.
Dave Trembley returns as the farm director after a two-year stint with the
Astros, while Brian Bridges was promoted from the Southeast crosschecker to
scouting director, replacing the fired Tony DeMacio.
Though the challenge to return to the days when Atlanta won 14 consecutive
division titles is substantial, the cupboard is not bare. Prior to the 2014
season, the Braves locked up many of their young, homegrown major leaguers,
including righthander Julio Teheran, closer Craig Kimbrel, first baseman
Freddie Freeman and shortstop Andrelton Simmons. Lefthander Alex Wood blossomed
into a No. 2 starter in 2014, and lefty Mike Minor provides another foundation
piece.
But outfielder Jason Heyward, one of Clark’s signature picks as Atlanta’s
2007 first-rounder, never signed an extension, prompting the Braves to trade
him to the Cardinals in a November trade that netted power righthanders in
big leaguer Shelby Miller and prospect Tyrell Jenkins. They add pitching depth
to a system heavier at the top with position players, such as catcher Christian
Bethancourt and second baseman Jose Peraza, who are both on the verge of
becoming starters in the big leagues.
While the Braves have some arms, the system appears thinner than it has in
years, particularly with lefthanded pitchers as well as impact position players
at the corners, an exception being 2014 first-round pick Braxton Davidson.
