Nickell wins another Spingold
The Nick Nickell squad continued an amazing run in the Spingold Knockout
Teams, coming from behind in the last quarter on Sunday to edge the Charlie
Weed (npc) team 111-106. The Nickell squad . Richard Freeman, Jeff Meckstroth,
Eric Rodwell, Bob Hamman and Paul Soloway is now 8-0 in Spingold finals,
including an amazing comeback from more than 70 IMPs down in the fourth
quarter two years ago, when they took the final set 84-2.
The runners-up are James Cayne, Michael Seamon, Fulvio Fantoni, Claudio Nunes,
Alfredo Versace and Lorenzo Lauria. The latter four are members of the
reigning Bermuda Bowl champions from Italy. The Spingold final in Chicago was
a tight match, with no team more than a few IMPs ahead Nickell led by only 3
IMPs after a quarter and 7 at the half. Weed edged into the lead 91-85 with a
quarter to go but could not hold off the winners.
With two deals two go, Nickell was leading in the quarter 26-1 and overall by
111-92. There was still a chance for Weed if the Italians, however. Hamman
and Soloway had missed a vulnerable slam on the final board that Versace and
Lauria were almost certain to reach.
The key was the next-to-last deal. Hamman and Soloway had stopped in 3NT on
two hands that would produce 6. without a specific lead. When Versace and
Lauria also stopped in 3NT, the match was over. Versace and Lauria did provide
the slam swing on the last deal, but it was not enough.
