Thank You for helping us spread compassion around the globe. In 2012, dozens
of people participated in the chanting during the six days of our Annual
Million Mani Retreat, and many more participated by webstream.
We appreciate the kind letters and emails we received from different parts of
the US - and the world - and want you to know we treasure your involement in
this retreat.
On behalf of KTD and the Million Mani Retreat Staff, we thank you from the
bottom of our hearts!
In Tibet, the practice of Avalokiteshvara, or Chenrezik, the bodhisattva of
compassion, was the most widely known and loved. All people, from infants to
the aged, knew and recited the compassion mantra OM MANI PADME HUM. This
one-week retreat will focus on the practice of this powerful, transformative
mantra, with the aim of accumulating 100 million recitations of the mantra
known as "the Mani" for the sake of peace in the world.
Now we are getting ready for the 2013 Mani Retreat. There will be several new
features this year.
Traditionally, the 100 Million Mani Accumulation Retreat takes place with a
six-session, 24-hours-per-day recitation. However, as this is a new practice
to America, for this retreat we will use a shorter practice schedule, rather
than the six-session practice schedule, beginning at 6 a.m. and ending at 9
p.m. each night.
In 2013, we will begin with a talk by Lama Kathy Wesley on the Chenrezik
practice at 7 p.m. Friday night May 3. The retreat will begin the following
day, May 4, at 6 a.m., and will continue until 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8.
The only interruption in this schedule will be the giving of the Chenrezik
empowerment at 7 p.m. on the evening of Saturday, May 4. At that time, Lama
Karma Drodhul will bestow the Chenrezik empowerment. As is customary at KTD,
there will be a donation requested for this empowerment. See the "Teaching
Schedule" section of this website for details.
Also new this year will be daily teachings on Chenrezig and compassion
practice by Lama Kathy Wesley. There will be approximately two hours of
teaching each day - one session in the morning, and one in the afternoon.
As for the practice sessions - all but one of the daily practice sessions
will use the Short Chenrezik sadhana. The final daily session, from 7 to 9
p.m., will include the longer Chenrezik sadhana used at KTD, as well as the
Amitabha meditation practice.
Although there is a schedule for the retreat, you should feel welcome to come
at any time of the day and add your recitations to the effort. Short
Chenrezik practice sheets will be available at the KTD shrineroom, along with
mantra counting sheets. In this way, you can come to the shrineroom, recite
for however long you wish and drop your counting sheets in our accumulation
basket.
For those who wish to participate from home, download the short Chenrezik
sadhana, Chenrezik sadhana with explanation, MP3 recording of the practice
and mantra counting sheets . Home participants in the Mani Mantra weekend can
report their mantras above.
