Flying over 7,800 miles around the world to play Major League Baseball in America is a bit unsettling. Just ask the New York Yankees' Chien Ming Wang. Even though the 25-year-old pitcher who signed with the Bronx Bombers in 2000 is well liked by New York fans and by his teammates, he says his lifestyle has completely changed. No longer being able to walk around his home country of Taiwan unrecognized, Wang still has trouble realizing he is indeed an Asian role model. "I don't think of myself really as a star. I'm just a pitcher," says Wang through a translator. "There are a lot of better ballplayers back home in Taiwan." Playing for George Steinbrenner is already an intimidating task and even though he fears nobody when he's out on the mound, he says there is a lot of pressure being under the New York spotlight. "Playing here is pretty challenging and very hard," he says. "There's a lot of pressure to play in front of the fans of New York City. And the media makes it difficult too so I do find it very challenging to play here." It isn't a huge surprise that the one thing the pitcher misses most right now is his home in Tainan, Taiwan. He says it can be lonely sometimes living here by himself but he does manage to speak to his mom once week. "I call my family on the phone once week and I e-mail my friends when I get a chance," says Wang. "I miss my family the most and the language has been a tough adjustment." For Wang, English is one of the most difficult things about adapting to America. When he's off the field, he enjoys going to clubs and watching romantic movies. He says he hasn't had a chance to see much of the sites in New York City and his visit to Chinatown wasn't an impressive one. But he does feel right at home surrounded by this teammates. "I want to concentrate on playing baseball. I know I really have to try. Having the big stars play behind me, like Derek Jeter, makes me feel more relaxed and have peace of mind," he says. "When they called the car to take me to the airport to come here to the Major Leagues, I was still shocked. I called my mom right away and said that I'm going to the big leagues." While there is no shortage of high profile Japanese players in the majors, Chien Ming Wang hopes to pave the way for other Taiwanese athletes. - Michelle Yu -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.113.92.3
