Wang makes it all right

The Yankees needed Chien-Ming Wang to step up and help out their tired
bullpen on Saturday, part of the reason why they shipped him back to the
team hotel around the fifth inning on Friday. The move paid off as Wang
spun eight innings in a rebound performance, showcasing the best parts of
his arsenal in a 7-2 win over the Tigers.

Pitching coach Ron Guidry offered that he'd given Wang an empty threat of
sending him down to Double-A Trenton if he didn't pitch a good game,
helping out the Thunder playoff push. It made for a nice anecdote, at least
until Wang was befuddled and denied anyone had said anything to him about
Trenton.

On more truthful terms, the Yankees tweaked Wang's delivery slightly and
sped it up, helping him gain a little more aggressiveness and force. They
also urged him to trust his sinker more, and the results bore it out. With
Phil Hughes and Mike Mussina going in the last two games of this series,
Wang's start had become something of a must-win. They got what they needed,
and suddenly, they don't seem quite so tired.
