WANG SHARP IN LAST SPRING FLING
March 27, 2008 -- CLEARWATER, Fla. -
His work on a slider and change-up complete, Chien-Ming Wang is ready to
begin a season in which he will be the Opening Day starter Monday at
Yankee Stadium against Toronto.
"He had a decent spring," Joe Girardi said of his ace who gave up four runs
and six hits in five innings yesterday in a 4-0 loss to the Phillies at
Bright House Field. "Today was his best day."
Like Ian Kennedy on Tuesday, Wang was hurt by misplays in the field.
During a four-run second, second baseman Robinson Cano botched a double-play
pivot by trying to bare hand the toss from Wilson Betemit, and Alex Rodriguez
was charged with an error on a bad-hop ground ball.
Following the four-run second, pitching coach Dave Eiland instructed Wang
to start pitching inside more.
"He told me the hitters were too comfortable and that I should make them
move their legs," Wang said. "I felt better after that."
Wang finished the spring with an inflated 8.04 ERA.
