WANG ONLY GUARANTEE IN YANKS '09 ROTATION

The 2009 Yankees have a lot more questions than who will be in their
rotation when they move into the House The Boss Built next year.
Center field is an issue. First base, too. Will Robinson Cano be dealt
for pitching? Will Orlando Hudson be signed to replace Cano? What
about the bullpen? Does Jorge Posada's shoulder allow him to catch?
Nevertheless, because starting pitching dominates every discussion about
what needs to be addressed after this nightmarish season ends and
Phil Hughes was on the mound last night, talk of the 2009 rotation was
in the cool Bronx air.
When Hughes reports to spring training in February, he will find himself
one of many candidates for a rotation that has one guarantee at this
point: Chien-Ming Wang.
"A lot depends on what we do in the offseason," manager Joe Girardi said.
"There will be a lot of competition for jobs next year in spring training."
Nothing Hughes did in four up-and-down innings in last night's 5-1 win
over the White Sox in front of 52,671 at Yankee Stadium helped or hurt
his chances of opening next season in the big leagues for the second
straight season. But because he is 22 the Yankees believe there is
enough time - and talent - for him to develop into a successful major
league pitcher.
"It would be a surprise for someone in my situation to be guaranteed
anything," said Hughes, who is 0-4 with a 7.96 ERA in seven starts.
"I feel like I let the team down. I will get some innings in the
(Arizona Fall League) and (spring training) will be a battle."
Hughes allowed a run, four hits, two walks and unveiled a cut fastball
that wasn't a big part of his arsenal during his previous stint in
the majors.
The Yankees' tragic number against the Wild Card-leading Red Sox is
three and fell to two versus the AL East-leading Rays.
Johnny Damon's two-run homer and Alex Rodriguez's solo blast in the
eighth stretched a 2-1 Yankees lead to 5-1 and made a winner out of
Brian Bruney (3-0).
Bruney was one of four relievers to keep the AL Central-leading White Sox
scoreless across the final five frames.
It was Rodriguez' 35th homer. It's the 12th season he has hit at least
that many and ties Babe Ruth for the all-time lead. Rodriguez has hit 35
or more the last 11 seasons and that is the most of any player in history.
Hughes suffered a fractured rib and went on the disabled list in early
May. Three months later he wasn't pitching good enough on a minor league
rehab assignment to be recalled and was optioned to Charleston (Single-A).
Following eight minor league outings (six at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre
where he was 1-0 with a 5.90 ERA) he was promoted Sept. 13.
Wang has one spot in February. CC Sabathia, Ben Sheets, A.J. Burnett,
Derek Lowe and Jake Peavy will get plenty of mention.
Hughes? He will be in the mix. With Alfredo Aceves and everybody else
not guaranteed of anything.
