Chien-Ming Wang didn’t look great, but he looked much better than those
first three starts. This wasn’t going to be a magic trick where Wang
came back and won 19 games right away. It’s going to take some time for
him to develop the confidence he had from 2005-08, but we saw more of the
old Wanger tonight than we did in April.

The sinker actually sank most of the time, and it was clocked repeatedly
in the 91-94 range. Yes, he gave up a monster blast by Raul Ibanez - join
the club - how does this guy lead the majors in homers? - and he allowed
five other hits, but three of them were ground balls that found holes.

“I saw a lot more velocity, a lot more sink when the balls were down,”
Joe Girardi said. “He still left some balls up, but it was a big step in
the right direction.”

And just when it looked like things would get out of hand in the eight,
Wang got Ibanez - who we have already established to be a pretty good
hitter - to ground into an inning-ending double play. It may take some
time, but I believe we’ll see Wang return to form by mid-June.
