Cardinals checking Wang’s medical records
It’s a fairly small item in a weekend Post-Dispatch story,* but it seems
the Cardinals are actively checking Chien-Ming Wang’s medical records.
St. Louis pitching coach Dave Duncan — Shelley’s father — has a strong
history of working with sinkerballers and reclamation projects, and given
Matt Holliday’s contract, it makes sense that that Cardinals would be
interested in a fairly cheap, risk-reward type pitcher (the Post-Dispatch
also mentions John Smoltz and Derrick Turnbow).
For Wang, the destination might make sense because the Cardinals depth chart
doesn’t even list a fifth starter. Wang won’t be ready for opening day,
but a door could open fairly easily for him to back into a big league
rotation once he’s ready.
* Nice job by iYankees to pick up the Post-Dispatch story. I completely
missed it on Sunday.

The Cardinals remain interested in adding a pitcher, possibly one who can
either start or relieve. They have been in contact with John Smoltz's agent
and they'd like the veteran to hold on until they have a better feel for
their payroll. The Cardinals had a scout attend Derrick Turnbow's throw last
week, and on Tuesday they are likely to have a representative see former
All-Star Ben Sheets throw a bullpen session in Monroe, La. The club also
is reviewing the medical information on Chien-Ming Wang, who had his season
with the Yankees truncated by surgery. Turnbow fits the Cardinals need for
bullpen depth, especially as they near their payroll limit.

Cards checking Chien-Ming Wang’s medical info
January 19, 2010, 11:00 am by iYankees
According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals
are in the process of “reviewing the medical information on Chien-Ming
Wang,” a potential rotation option pitching coach Dave Duncan described
as “intriguing” in mid-December. If the interest is real, St. Louis would
be a nice landing spot for the rehabilitating right-hander, as Mitchell
Boggs, a less than impressive name in comparison, is currently penciled in
as the team’s 5th starter. In addition, Kyle Lohse and Brad Penny are not
exactly locks for a full season’s worth of work, therefore, having a
relatively inexpensive, high-upside arm like Wang’s could help the
Cardinals construct ample rotation depth for 2010.
Wang has garnered a lot of interest but is not expected to throw off a
mound until mid-February at the earliest.
