Chien-Ming Wang to make rehab start at Syracuse tonight,
return not imminent

Right-hander Chien-Ming Wang will make his fourth rehab start in Class
AAA Syracuse tonight as he returns from a strained hamstring he suffered
during a March 15 spring training start.

Wang will make at least one more minor league rehab appearance before
he returns to the majors, Manager Davey Johnson. With the Nationals’
rotation pitching better than any starting five in baseball, posting
a collective 2.19 ERA, the Nationals have no reason to rush Wang into
their starting five.

“With the starters throwing as good as they’re throwing, they want
him to be doing the same thing,” Johnson said. “At this point, we
want him to be pretty much game ready.”

The Nationals have been taking a wait-and-see approach in regard to
slotting Wang into their rotation. The original plan called for Ross
Detwiler to move to the bullpen, but Detwiler leads the Nationals with
a 1.59 ERA.

Wang threw roughly 75 pitches in his last rehab start, at Class A
Hagerstown. He will probably be ready for the majors after tonight,
but the Nationals, it seems, will buy some more time before they have
to solve a good problem to have.
