Canada clobbers Taipei in men's baseball

CBC SPORTS ONLINE - If quality pitching, strong defence and a balanced attack
 are keys to Olympic baseball gold, Canada is off to a good start in Athens.

Stubby Clapp, Pierre-Luc Laforest and Peter Orr drove in two runs apiece Sunday,
 while Mike Johnson pitched seven scoreless innings in Canada's 7-0 round-robin
win over Chinese Taipei at the Olympic Baseball Centre.

Reliever Chris Mears and closer Aaron Myette recorded the final six outs to
complete the shutout.

Canada shone in the field, turning a pair of double plays. Left-fielder Jeff
Guiel also nailed a Taipei runner trying to stretch a single into a double in
the second inning, while Clapp made a pretty shoestring grab at second base in
 the sixth.

Outfielder Adam Stern posted Canada's other RBI with an eighth-inning triple.

Johnson held Taipei to four hits, walked one and struck out three. The Calgary
 native said it took him a little while to find his rhythm.

"I didn't have my good stuff (early) but after that second inning I felt I
really got into a groove," he said.

Chih-Chia Chang took the loss, despite striking out nine during a six-inning
stint.

Canada, which joins medal favourites Japan and Cuba in first place at 1-0,
plays Italy (0-1) on Monday.

In other action, Norihiro Nakamura paced Japan with a two-run home run in a
12-0 pasting of Italy on Sunday.

Cuba, which has taken two golds and a silver in baseball, downed Australia 4-1.


All eight teams in the tournament play each other once in the preliminary round
with the top four advancing to the semifinals on Aug. 24.
