Serie A side Roma have confirmed that midfielder Daniele De Rossi
needs an operation after fracturing his right cheekbone during last
night’s 1-1 draw with Inter at the San Siro.

The Italy international limped off during the first half, after being
accidentally elbowed by Patrick Vieira, and went in for scans at the
Niguarda Hospital in Milan.

“De Rossi fractured his right cheekbone and will undergo surgery today,”
reads a note on the clubs official website.

Coach Claudio Ranieri hit out at Vieira after the encounter, claiming that
the Frenchman often jumps with his elbows raised and such foul would be
worthy of a red card in England.

De Rossi had been named in Marcello Lippi’s squad for the upcoming
friendlies against Holland and Sweden, but he is now expected to pull out.
