He's out of option, so he must go through waivers.
By placing him on irrevocable - or release - waivers, they have put more power
in Ankiel's hands. If another team would claim Ankiel, he could
request his release instead of reporting to the new team, then be free to
sign with any organization.
Then he could sign a minor league K with the Cards then.
