From first to worst?
Cardinals free agents Reggie Sanders and Mark Grudzielanek are among
the players being pursued this offseason by the Kansas City Royals,
baseball's worst team last season with a 56-106 record.
Sanders and his wife went so far as to meet with the Royals and take
what the Kansas City Star described as "get-acquainted tour" of
Kansas City on Tuesday.
The Cardinals have said they are interested in re-signing left fielder
Sanders, a 15-year veteran who will be 38 on opening day 2006. But the
Royals, Minnesota Twins, Florida Marlins and Seattle Mariners also
have expressed interest.
Sanders was limited to 93 games last season because of a broken leg but
still hit 21 homers while batting .271.
In his first season with the Cardinals, second baseman Grudzielanek
batted .294 and often played spectacular defense.
The Star reported that the Royals also are pursuing Tony Graffanino
as a possible second-base option.
