Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that, pending results
from a physical, the St. Louis Cardinals will lock up young hurler Adam
Wainwright to a contract extension today. The deal is expected to be for 4
years and nearly $15 million guaranteed, with options for the next two years.
The 4 guaranteed years would effectively lock up the right-hander through his
arbitration years.
As Goold notes, a year after serving as the Cardinals' closer in 2006 (when he
buckled Carlos Beltran's knees to clinch the NLCS en route to a World Series
title), Wainwright won 14 games as a starter in 2007 with a 3.70 ERA, including
a post-All-Star break ERA of 2.71 ERA.
