base to 38 Saturday when he singled to left field in the sixth inning.
Pujols' steak is the longest to begin a season since New York Yankees
shortstop Derek Jeter did so in the first 53 games in 1999.
Pujols' streak is the longest by a Cardinals player to begin a season dating
to 1956.
Hall of Famer Ted Williams reached in 65 games to begin the 1948 season and
had an 84-game stretch from July 1 to Sept. 28, 1949.
Pujols is trying to become the fourth known Cardinal to reach base in 50
straight games, following Stan Musial's 55-game streak in 1943, Ray Blades'
54-game streak in 1925 and Vince Coleman's 50-game run in 1987.
