[情報] Done: Cards Stay South of $3 Million for Miller

The Cardinals have signed first-round draft pick Shelby Miller for a $2.875 
million bonus, a franchise record for a high school player. The club plans
to issue an official announcement shortly.

Miller, the draft's 19th overall pick, temporarily becomes the most expensive
sign of his draft class. More than a dozen teams have yet to sign their picks
with a flurry of activity anticipated before tonight's 11 p.m. CST deadline.

Miller, a hard-throwing righthander from Brownwood, Tex., immediately becomes
the system's top prospect while serving as a break from the organization's
long-time reluctance to invest premium draft picks in high school pitching.
Miller's bonus exceeds the $2.5 million Rick Ankiel received after being
selected in the second round of the 1997 draft.

The Cardinals signed Miller well short of his initially advertised $4 million
asking price. The club also achieved its goal of bringing him in for less than
$3 million. Miller had accepted a scholarship to attend Texas A&M but from the
outset made clear his preference to play professionally.

Miller consistently throws a 94 mile-per-hour fastball and possesses the frame,
natural movement on his pitches and coachability that lead many to project him
as a future ace.

Today's signing comes barely six weeks after the Cardinals spent a record $3.1
million to land Dominican teenager Wagner Mateo. That bonus represented a club
record for an amateur player from the Caribbean.
