Carlos Martinez is often compared to Pedro Martinez and in his start against
Colorado’s Double-A affiliate Tulsa, he certainly looked like it. He made
quick work of the Drillers, needing just 67 pitches to get through five
innings. He surrendered just one run on four hits without walking a batter
and striking out five.
Martinez has outstanding raw stuff, though his numbers don’t always reflect
it from start to start. The most important thing is that he still has to
consistently locate his stuff. But while he’s advanced for his age, he’s
still learning the intricacies of pitching like how to set hitters up, to
read swings, and make in-game adjustments among other things. Much of this
should come with experience, and if he ever figures things out his ceiling is
as high as any pitching prospect in baseball.
I will point out one area where he is not similar to Pedro Martinez is...

...with his arm action. Martinez tends to show the ball to hitters, which
costs him deception. It’s something that Cardinal are working with him on,
though they need to be careful in not tinkering too much with his arm action.
Martinez is a quick-twitch athlete with outstanding arm speed which allows a
person of his size to consistently unleash mid – upper 90 mph fastballs and
maintain that velocity deep into his starts. Up in the zone, the pitch is
almost unhittable. It picks up an extra gear and gets on hitters quickly.
Down in the zone it becomes heavy and difficult to lift. Martinez gets hurt
when his fastball comes about thigh high.
