http://ppt.cc/ol0F Chris Carpenter, the Cardinals never-say-die pitcher, threw a 75-pitch bullpen session on Friday afternoon, providing added proof that his career, which looked over in the spring before of nerve damage in his arm, may have another act. "Everything's come out pretty good," he said. "My arm's come back, I feel strong. I know there are a lot of questions on why. I'm not trying to be a hero, or do anything crazy, I just want to go out and see if I can pitch and see how it feels. I'm not going to have super-high expectations, but as long as it continues to go well, I'm going to continue to go out and take that next step. So far it's been good." What's next is more bullpen sessions for Carpenter, who said he would have a better idea at the end of the Cardinals' current homestand as to when he'll get in games. He said Friday's session was his fourth or fifth time in the bullpen, and he's felt no pain and no numbness. "I'm going to continue to throw bullpens," he said. "Just continue to get some work up there, continue to put some stress on my arm and see what happens. I've had no problems, no issues, no setbacks so far, and my arm feels strong. I'm feeling good about it. I'll continue to do it." Carpenter said he was further along than he was in the spring, when numbness in his arm looked to end his career. Carpenter, known as the toughest fighter on the team, refused to use the word "retire," and it was while playing catch with his 10-year-old son that he found himself able to throw. "I'm out there at full strength," he said, "throwing all my pitches. Today I threw a lot of pitches. Usually I've thrown 50, 55, today I think it was 70, to see how it would go, and as I said, it's been's great." Carpenter said he'd throw another bullpen session on Monday, then another on Wednesday or Thursday. "We'll know how I'm feeling," he said, "and then we'll have to start talking about a schedule after that." Friday was the first time manager Mike Matheny had seen Carpenter throw as he tries work himself and he said he thought Carpenter looked good. "I think he's about as tough as anyone on the mound," Matheny said. "Mentally tough and physically. We've seen him come back from quite a few things. This guy loves the game of baseball, loves to compete. … It's something that's part of who he is, part of what drives him."
