[報導] Cardinals To Sign Mark Ellis

The Cardinals' search for a righthanded-hitting complement for rookie Kolten
Wong has ended with an experienced second baseman joining the club for 2014.

Mark Ellis, a respected glove in the field and presence in the clubhouse, has
agreed to a one-year contract with the Cardinals, a source with knowledge of
the agreement confirmed. The deal will be finalized and announced once Ellis
passes a physical, which could happen early this week.

The financial terms of the deal were not immediately available.

Ellis, 36, spent the past two seasons with the Dodgers, where he was the
usual starter at second base and had more than 400 at-bats in each season. In
126 games in 2013, Ellis hit .270 with a .323 on-base percentage and a .351
slugging percentage. The Cardinals met with his agent during the winter
meetings last week in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., and the biggest question
surrounding the veteran infielder was whether he could find more playing time
elsewhere.

The New York Yankees are in the market for a second baseman, and Kansas City
recently signed Omar Infante, one of the better second basemen available on
the market.

The Cardinals intend to give Wong every opportunity to win the starting job
at second base. They have sought a righthanded-hitting option at second base
to challenge and complement Wong.

Of Ellis' 1,362 games, he's started 1,263 at second base.

He has played around 63 innings in the majors at each shortstop and third
base. The Cardinals were looking at options at third and second base to add
to the bench.

Ellis hit .282 with a .331 on-base percentage against lefties in 131 at-bats
in 2013. In games started by lefties, Ellis batted .304 with a .364 on-base
percentage. If Wong is able to win the regular job, Ellis offers a
righthanded bat who can then spell the lefty against the lefthanded pitchers
in the division.

Matt Carpenter, who became an All-Star at second in his first season at the
position, is moving to third base for 2014. The Cardinals cleared the way for
Carpenter to move back to his natural position and Wong to take over at
second by trading David Freese to the Angels in November.

Ellis spent the first nine years of his career with Oakland, where he had one
of his finer seasons in 2010, when he hit .291. He's had nine seasons of at
least 20 doubles.

In the National League championship series this past October against the
Cardinals, Ellis played in all six games and went six-for-25 (.240) with a
run scored.
