Cardinals Insider: The shift is on, as Redbirds catch up with the times

It was nearly two years ago, on Memorial Day 2012, that pitcher Lance Lynn got
a weak grounder from Atlanta’s Dan Uggla and turned to dutifully cover first
base for what he figured would be a routine final out of the inning. He stopped
as he left the mound, befuddled by what he saw.
He was alone. His infielders had abandoned him.

The Cardinals had deployed an extreme shift for the righthanded-hitting
slugger, relocating second baseman Tyler Greene to the shortstop side of the
base. First baseman Matt Adams even shifted — but only far enough to chase
Uggla’s dozen-hop grounder as it skipped into right field. Lynn’s expression
was clear: What is this shift? It wasn’t frustration on his face, he explained
this past week.
紅鳥對一位右打的砲手佈署了一個極端的移防，二壘手Tyler Greene移到游擊區，連一壘手

“Really it was shock,” Lynn said.

That moment captured some Cardinals’ reactions to shifts — curiosity,
embroidered with distrust. As the defensive shift movement spread the past few
years from true believers with Tampa Bay to devotees such as Pittsburgh, the
Cardinals remained mostly rooted in place.

Manager Mike Matheny admitted they didn’t shift because some pitchers were
uncomfortable with the moves, and their preference ruled. Lynn said there is
that initial unease that comes from looking to the right and not seeing a third
baseman who has been there for every other pitch of every other inning of his
life on the mound.

For the Cardinals, the shift is on.

Lynn said. “That’s something that we’re going to have to get used to as
pitchers. When you’re on the mound and you look to the right and there’s
nobody there, it’s kind of weird. We have to get used to the feel of it, the
look of it. They tell us now it will work. So, we better get used to it.”

Through the first nine games of this season, the Cardinals already had seen the
extremes of shifting. Adams has defied them several times by poking hits to
left field. The Cardinals robbed Jay Bruce of a base hit by moving second
baseman Kolten Wong into shallow right field. The Pirates, the division’s best
practitioners of the shift, stole at least four hits in a game from the Cards,
including one by putting an infielder right by second base for Jhonny Peralta.

“Tradition can be wonderful, but it can also be a vision killer,” Pirates
manager Clint Hurdle said. “I played in an era where a hard groundball up the
middle was a base hit nine (times) out of 10. Now it might be a base hit two
out of 10 times. So, if the information is there, it’s real, it plays out. You
’re really not doing the best job to help your team win if you’re not paying
attention to it.”
