LeBron says Cavs need to get better

The wounds were still stinging the day after the Cavaliers' turbulent season
came to a close, reopening each time someone described how it all came to an
abrupt end in Sunday's Game 7 loss to the Celtics in Boston. But the star
player, the coach and the general manager already were looking forward to how
to best patch the pain.

Cavaliers General Manager Danny Ferry said Monday he will take a couple of
weeks to reflect and assess the chaotic season before beginning a "deep dive"
into the roster to evaluate what changes need to be made to make the
Cavaliers the kind of team LeBron James will want to play on for the
remainder of his career, and the kind of team that can win a championship.

that," James said after Sunday's Game 7. "If that means some personnel
changes that need to happen, then so be it. The teams around us in the league
are continuing to get better."

That's as close as James has come to instructing his team to make changes,
and with a 2010 expiration date on his contract, that gives the Cavaliers two
more off-seasons to find his long-sought sidekick. With an $81 million
payroll that ranks fourth in the NBA and a handful of attractive expiring
contracts (guard Wally Szczerbiak, guard Damon Jones and forward Joe Smith
all up in 2009), changes for the Cavaliers are most likely to come from a
trade -- if they come at all.

Maybe this current roster just needs time to jell beyond the three months it
was together after the trade-deadline deal. Maybe it needs an offensive guru
to complement coach Mike Brown's defensive tilt, or a traditional point guard
who can distribute the ball effectively.

Ferry said he's not feeling deadline heat to find the right answer in the two
years before James is a free agent. He has simpler goals.

"We all want to win," Ferry said. "I want to win. [Owner] Dan Gilbert, Mike

based on giving ourselves the best opportunity to make that happen."

The plan right now includes re-signing restricted free-agent guards Daniel
Gibson and Delonte West, and potentially buying out the remaining year on
injured point guard Eric Snow's contract.

Beyond that, the team is trying to figure out what, exactly, went wrong in
losing a seven-game defensive playoff battle to Boston.

The simplest explanation is the current Cavaliers squad simply wasn't
together long enough. Only three players played in both the season-opening
loss to Dallas and the season-ending loss to the Celtics: James, Ilgauskas
and Jones.

In between, the Cavaliers endured contract holdouts from forward Anderson

ranging from James' finger to Gibson's ankle to forward Ben Wallace's back,
and a midseason trade that resulted in three new players in the starting
lineup.

leader, the All-Star Game MVP and a first-team All-NBA selection. The
Cavaliers reached the NBA Finals last year. Expectations were high.

"That's the good thing about being here now -- if you don't win a

seasons remaining on his contract, the 32-year-old Lithuanian knows this
summer in Beijing is likely his last opportunity.

One day after the season ended, Ilgauskas still didn't know if he had the
Cavaliers' permission to represent his home country in three months.
Ilgauskas is one of 14 NBA players who need permission from their teams to
play in international competition because of insurance clauses in their
contracts.

Last month, the Lithuanian Basketball Federation began a petition to persuade
the Cavaliers to allow Ilgauskas to play in China. With a history of fragile
feet and more recently a back injury that forced him to miss two weeks, the
Cavaliers are hesitant.

Cavaliers guards: The Cavaliers not only have decisions to make on whether to
re-sign Gibson and West, and for how much, but they also might have to make a
decision on Snow. The point guard played in just 22 games this season, the
last Feb. 22, because of surgery and then arthritis-related symptoms in his
left knee.

He is scheduled to earn $7.3 million next season, the final year on his

Ferry said.

"It definitely fits my style, and I think the type of player I am fits
