 As he took the most unsteady walk of his 25 years, away from his team
 and into an uncertain future, Delonte West had no idea the leader of
 the pack was advancing from behind.

 month to tackle a years-long struggle with depression.

 Go back to the Cavs’ locker room in Boston after Game 7 of the Eastern
 Conference semifinals last spring, when James sat in the corner with his
 buddy, Daniel Gibson, wondering whether he should have pulled the trigger
 with the Cavs down by 3 late in the game instead of passing to West, a guard,
 whose southpaw 3-pointer rimmed out.

 The superstar is invariably burdened by that inner debate, but the leader
 doesn’t blame the outcome of his decision on someone else.

“You know, for most guys, when the season is over and you’ve lost in the
 playoffs, it’s hard to imagine yourself going through training camp and
 the regular season all over again,” West said. “But that day, you really
 got a sense of his love of the game. You could almost see inside LeBron’s
 mind and you could see it on his face. It was like, ‘You got me this time,
 but I’ll be right back here next year.’ And he never made us feel like he
 was disappointed in anybody. If anything, he was disappointed in himself.”

 As West will tell you, it is tough enough to survive in this sport without
 extra psychological baggage. When he went home to Washington last month for
 therapy, James texted him regularly and was waiting with open arms, as
 promised, upon his return.

“Players are not machines,” West said. “We’re like everyone else, with
 stresses and pressures.”

 Their success typically begins with a franchise player who knows how to
 lead, and is right behind his teammates in moments of need, in this case
 if only until July 1, 2010.
