Cleveland Cavaliers guard Daniel Gibson out two weeks with toe injury
PHILADELPHIA - The Cleveland Cavaliers will be without Daniel Gibson for
at least two weeks because of a toe injury that he sustained in Tuesday's
victory over Toronto. He suffered what the team called a sprained left
great toe in the second quarter.
Gibson was examined by Dr. Jim Sferra at Cleveland Clinic Sports Health,
which included X-rays and an MRI. He will rest for two weeks, then be
re-evaluated.
Gibson had been playing well lately, averaging 13.8 points and shooting
61 percent from the field in four games in December. That came after a
frustrating November for the backup guard, as he averaged 7.5 points and
shot 33 percent.
A key player off the bench this season, Gibson is averaging 24 minutes
per game, averaging 9.4 points overall. So that means other players will
have to fill in, especially since most of Gibson's time came at point
guard behind Mo Williams.
The Cavs do have depth the backcourt. Williams is averaging only 32
minutes, so he can play more. Delonte West was the Cavs' starting point
guard in the second half of last season. He has been starting at shooting
guard this season, but he can switch back to the point when Williams goes
to the bench.
The player who could see more action is Sasha Pavlovic at backup shooting
guard. He played little in November, but has been averaging 15.2 minutes
and scoring 5.6 points while shooting 48 percent in December. Wally
Szczerbiak also could see a little more time in the backcourt.
