A Cavs-Nuggets game means LeBron James vs. Carmelo Anthony to most NBA fans.

But focus too much on those two friends and rivals, and two other
difference-makers could get ignored. When the game tips at 10:30 tonight,
expect the point guards — Mo Williams for the Cavs and Chauncey Billups for
the Nuggets — to make an impact, too.

Each already has made a big impact on their new teams this season.

The Cavs are off to a franchise-best 21-4 record to lead the Central Division
with Williams running the point. The Nuggets lead the Mountain Division at
17-8, going 16-5 since acquiring Billups in the early stages of the season
when they sent All-Star Allen Iverson to Detroit.

Williams isn’t surprised by how well Billups has taken to his new situation
in his hometown of Denver.

A former NBA Finals MVP with the Pistons, Billups is averaging 18.2 points
and 7.0 assists with the Nuggets. They’ve become stronger defensively and
more fluid offensively.

“I think for him it was more he was comfortable (coming to Denver),”
Williams said. “You’re talking about a guy going home. You’re talking
about one of the better point guards in the NBA. He doesn’t have anything to
prove; it’s just kind of fitting in. And the way he plays, it’s easy for
him to fit in.”

Williams has done the same in Cleveland, where he averages 15.6 points and
 4.2 assists. He’s fit into the Cavs’ team defensive scheme and has helped
the offense become one of the best in the league.


Not only is Williams delivering as a shooter, he’s proven to be quite
creative. He even has his own play — “Nashing it.”

That’s when Williams dribbles around, like two-time MVP Steve Nash, looking
to create for a teammate. He’ll sometimes dribble into the lane, under the
hoop and come back out.

主Steve Nash)。他有時會深入禁區，在籃下把球傳出給隊友。


“I dribble around and dribble around until the defense goes to sleep,”
Williams said. “The defense has a tendency to stand and kind of look.”

When that happens, “in that split second” he looks for a teammate to cut to
the basket for a pass and layup.

Head Coach Mike Brown said it took the Cavs some time to get a feel for what
Williams was doing. In the preseason, like the defense, they too stood around
and watched Williams.

Williams even is getting credit for the team’s significant improvement at
the foul line. A season ago, the Cavs shot 71.7 percent at the line — 28th
in the league. They enter tonight shooting 77.8 — ninth in the league.
Williams is second in the league at 94.6

“I can’t take the credit for that,” Williams said. “Guys are just
focusing more ...  especially LeBron, for example. He’s shooting the ball
exceptionally well from the free throw line, but he’s focusing on his free
throws a whole lot more. I wouldn’t say I’m the reason. Maybe they’ll say
it to give me some love.”

Williams joked that he doesn’t stick around and work with guys after
practice. But he does know that one guy hitting his free throws can set the
tone.

“In some shape or form, it is true. It is contagious when things go well,”
Williams said. “When a team shoots the ball well, it seems that it just
spreads around.

“If I did help, I’ll try not to miss (any) more this year.”
