Cleveland Cavaliers coach Mike Brown needs to change the offense now by Bill Livingston/Plain Dealer Columnist Friday June 26, 2009, 6:44 PM On one hand, you've got the guy who played Kazaam, a genie, in the movies. Nobody is going to put Shaquille O'Neal back in the bottle. On the other hand, you've got the guy who likes to be called the King. In his six years here, LeBron James has usually had the ball in his hands, dribbling, dribbling. Basketball as still life. Despite attempts to cast the big trade in terms of two Hollywood divas, jealous over the number of their lines in the script, new marriages usually begin with a vast store of goodwill. The Shaq-Kobe Bryant Lakers dissolved in acrimony, but James always has been a good teammate. Maybe it's because he is King Sol, and the other Cavaliers are planets revolving around him. But the inherent generosity of spirit that comes with being a willing passer will lead to his best efforts to accommodate O'Neal. Shaq will report with optimism, too, intending to improve even more on a body of work that has devolved into a game of championship one-upmanship with Bryant. So the hindrance will not be personalities. It will be technical basketball. The problem lies in the halfcourt offense, where predictability occurs in endless loops of high pick-and-pops with Zydrunas Ilgauskas and side pick-and-rolls with Anderson Varejao. This is because coach Mike Brown knows the last resort is also the best chance for success. Brown has had an excellent four-year run by getting the ball to James in the crunch and letting him spin gold from straw. But Brown has to put down the security blanket now and run some grown-up offense. O'Neal will be content to share the billing on the marquee with James. He was always encouraging Dwyane Wade in Miami, nurturing Wade's rise as a star, in part by telling him that he already was one. But Shaq is going to want his 15-18 touches per game in the paint. This is a man who spoke his mind to coaches like Phil Jackson and Pat Riley. No way is he biting his tongue with Brown. James' game is in the paint, with those bulling drives of his. But so is Shaq's. He was winning titles with bulldozer moves when Dwight Howard, this year's playoff nemesis, was 14 years old. While James was a good fit in the star-studded Team USA lineup in Beijing at the Olympics, that was more of a high-post offense. Shaq is a good passer out of double teams, but he only commands them in the paint. The solution is to begin the halfcourt offense with the ball out of James' hands. Brown has paid lip service to this at times, but he lets it wither during games because James is more comfortable as a ball handler. The change would expand the dimensions of James' game because he could get the ball in the paint on cuts and curls without having to beat three defenders along the way. Because of the imperative to change the offense, the Cavs will make another run at veteran Jason Kidd, who has good size at the point, who is a truly great passer, and who is a James favorite. Here is how things have always worked: Brown had written the practice time for the day after James' 3-point miracle shot beat Orlando. Then, LeBron met with him. An aide soon bustled out of the coach's office, erased the time, and wrote "No practice." But to make this work, Brown has to deliver an indelible message.
