Cleveland Cavaliers forward Jawad Williams surprised by call,
but shows he's ready to answer it
Jawad Williams admitted he wasn't entirely sure he heard right when
Cavaliers coach Mike Brown called his name late in the first quarter
of Wednesday's blowout victory over the visiting Washington Wizards.

"There was a quick moment where I didn't know what he said," the former
St. Edward star said with a little smile. "But when I realized he was
talking to me, I was ready to go."

That, as much as anything, is exactly why Brown felt comfortable calling
on Williams to replace Zydrunas Ilgauskas with 14 seconds left in the
first quarter. He played the entire second quarter, too, and by halftime
had established his career high in minutes. He finished with seven points,
one rebound, four assists and one steal in almost 25 minutes. He made 3
of 9 shots, including 1 of 4 3-pointers. Most important in Brown's eyes,
Williams was plus-18 for the evening, meaning the Cavs outscored the
Wizards by 18 points with Williams on the floor.

I thought he also did a nice job offensively. His percentage wasn't
great, but he took the good shots, and he drove the ball at the right
time to initiate our drive-and-kick game. I thought he had some great
ball reversals out on the floor. He played the right way offensively,
which really helped us out."

Even before all the playing time, Williams got good news Wednesday when
the Cavs guaranteed his $736,420 contract for the rest of the season.
Last year at this time, the team cut him, although it did sign him to
a couple of 10-day contracts during the regular season and also brought
him back for the playoffs.

He said going through it this season was easier because he'd been through
it last season, but he also said he didn't do anything differently as
the deadline to guarantee contracts approached.
"I never sweat the deadline at all," said Williams, who did get quite
a few more texts than usual after Wednesday's game. "I just continue to
work hard each and every day and hope for the best. That's all I can do."

He didn't say anything different, either, although he likely will get
more time because Jamario Moon is out with a strained abdominal muscle.
"I'm still Jawad," Williams said. "I'm still going to work hard each
and every day and try to get better. Everything is the same with me.
I've been working hard the past couple years, and now maybe I'll get a
chance to showcase a few things."

Teammate LeBron James hopes so, too.
"He's been waiting for his opportunity," James said. "He's worked hard
every day in practice. With Jamario being out, he's going to get some
time. With his ability to defend and his ability to shoot the ball, he
can really help us.

"Confidencewise, that is the big thing. Until you really get out there
and get some action, that helped. The team believing in him bringing him
back for a second year helped him."
Williams did admit he's a different player this year compared to last
year.
"Things are starting to slow down for me," he said. "I see the game a
lot slower. I see the game in my pace. Instead of trying to run around
and do everything, I'm taking my time with things."
Williams不認為他和去年有什麼不一樣，他就是看見比賽節奏有點慢，試著去改
變節奏，如此而已。
