Remaining big men will need to plug a big hole in Cleveland Cavaliers' lineup

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Almost anybody can be a center in Cavaliers coach Mike
Brown's offense.

Brown said Sunday that he views centers and power forwards the same in his
system. But don't misunderstand him. He wants Shaquille O'Neal back as soon
as possible.

"I'd rather have him than not have him," Brown said afer practice on Sunday.

Brown and the Cavs could be without O'Neal for the rest of the regular season
after Sunday's announcement that the veteran star will have surgery on his
sprained right thumb on Monday in Baltimore.

With O'Neal out, Anderson Varejao is the starting center, and J.J. Hickson,
Leon Powe and Antawn Jamison will spend time there as well.

"At any given time, any of our bigs can be out there as the center," Brown
said.

In O'Neal's absence, the Cavs will try to spread the floor more, run more
pick-and-rolls or catch-and-shoots and post up smaller players. The pace of
the game will be different, too.

"Guys are running a little bit more freely," Jamison said. "You're pushing
the ball a little bit more. But when [O'Neal] is there, you want to give him

The Cavs are currently without their center since 1996, Zydrunas Ilgauskas,

and Powe, who has just returned after left knee surgery.

Powe also has a knack for drawing fouls inside and is a good free-throw
shooter. But the most important thing that happened on Friday against Toronto
was that Powe pushed off the knee to start a great spin move that resulted in
a score -- and a healthy dose of confidence for him and his teammates.

While some national writers are saying the Cavs are better without O'Neal,
his teammates don't think so.

"One thing I will say, it's a different game," Jamison said. "You have to
help out a lot more because Shaq clogs up so much of that middle offensively
and defensively. You've got to live with what you have. We've got Andy, J.J.
Hickson and Powe coming back. We've got enough bodies. "But Shaq is one of
those guys who takes up so much attention and makes the game easy. Hopefully,
it's not anything serious. But I think the rest of the big guys can come in
and help."
