[外電] Knicks interested in Celtics assistant coach

If there is a No. 1 contender to challenge the favorite, Mark Jackson,
for the Knicks’ coaching vacancy, it may be the widely respected Tom
Thibodeau, who, like Jackson, is also a Jeff Van Gundy disciple. And Thibodeau,
who has more than a decade of experience as an NBA assistant coach, doesn’t
need Van Gundy to campaign for him on national television.
如果除了受歡迎的Jackson之外，有任何人可以跟他一起競爭尼克教練的空位，那應該就是
被大家所尊敬的Thibodeau了，他們兩人都曾是Jeff Van Gundy底下的學生。而Thibodeau
擔任NBA助理教練已有超過10年的經驗，並不需要恩師在電視上為他競選。

Thibodeau, the associate head coach of the Boston Celtics who served on
Van Gundy’s staff in New York and Houston, was initially thought to be
someone who might not be available for an interview until after the playoffs.
But Sunday, Doc Rivers said he would allow his assistants to interview for
available jobs during the playoffs. Rivers, however, won’t allow one of his
coaches to be named a head coach until after the Celtics’ season is over.
Thibodeau is signed only for this season.
Thibodeau是賽爾提克隊的副總教練，過去在紐約和休士頓時是Van Gundy的助理，大家原
本以為直到季後賽結束之前他應該都不能接受其他隊的面試。但河流大在星期天時說，他
會讓他的助理在季後賽當中去面試其他有機會的工作，不過在超賽放暑假之前，他不會讓
他的教練們跑去其他隊當總教練。Thibodeau只跟賽爾提克簽約一季。

This news prompted Knicks president Donnie Walsh to go ahead and make a
formal request to meet with Thibodeau. If the top-seeded Celtics sweep the
Atlanta Hawks in their first-round series, it could leave some time before
the second round for Thibodeau and Walsh to meet.
這個消息讓尼克隊的老闆Walsh開始積極地向Thibodeau提出正式會面的要求。如果賽爾提
克第一輪橫掃了老鷹，這樣第二輪比賽開始之前他們兩人就有好些時間可以談。

"Normally, when teams are in the playoffs, teams aren’t interested to do
that," Walsh said. "So I haven’t really pushed that, but I will, because it
seems there is an intimation that they would do that."
Walsh won’t be alone. Chicago Bulls executive vice president John Paxson
also wants to bring in Thibodeau, a noted defensive specialist, to discuss
the opening there. Former Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle is believed to
have the inside track for the job, but Paxson has had a deep respect for
Thibodeau since he brought him in to interview for an assistant position in
2003.
「通常進入季後賽的球隊都不會想這麼做，」Walsh說：「所以我一直沒有很積極，不過
現在就不一樣了，因為他們似乎有意要這麼做。」而且不只Walsh，公牛隊的副執行長

Herb Williams also will get an interview, Walsh said. As Newsday first
reported Monday, Williams met with Walsh to discuss his future with the
franchise and Walsh asked the longtime Knicks assistant if he wanted to be a
candidate as the head coach.
"And he said he did," Walsh said, "so we’ll continue this."
尼克老闆Walsh 說Williams也會接受面試。星期一的新聞報導指出，Williams已經和
Walsh會面與決策團討論他的未來，如果他之後想被選為總教練，Walsh要求他先擔任尼克
隊的長期助教。

The idealistic scenario that had Van Gundy playing the role of Billy Martin
was quickly put to rest when the former Knicks coach told Walsh on Tuesday
that he did not wish to be considered for the job.
Walsh said Van Gundy cited "his own personal reasons" for the decision to not
explore a second tour as Knicks coach.

"I thought that, if he was coaching, that he’s certainly a guy we should
talk to," Walsh said Tuesday in a conference call with reporters. "But he let
me know that, for his own reasons, he doesn’t think he’ll be coaching for a
while, so that’s where it is."

Isiah no longer full-time. Walsh didn’t say the reassigned Isiah Thomas was
forbidden to have contact with the players next season, but it certainly
sounded as if Thomas’ new role involves being completely invisible. "He’s
not coming in every day like he used to," Walsh said, "but he is there as a
resource for me."

During an interview on ESPN Radio, Walsh said Thomas is "not going to be here
on a full-time basis anymore. I’ll be calling the shots, I’m in charge of
the franchise. It’s my responsibility where it was his."
