There was good news and bad news for the Boston Celtics after they won their
17th world championship in June. The good news was that they had their entire
star-studded starting line up on the books for next season. The bad news was
that they were at risk for losing their bench, headlined by James Posey,
which played an integral part in their run. With nearly all of their salary
tied up in the Big Three, the Celtics were faced with retaining a lot for a
little. Now that Posey has signed with the New Orleans Hornets and the
futures of P.J. Brown and Sam Cassell are unknown, do the Cs have a deep
enough bench to defend their title?

Tony Allen: re-signed to 2-year contract
Grade: C+
Which Tony Allen will show up next season? Will it be the fearless defensive
specialist who showed potential with his ability to slash to the basket two
years ago? Or, will it be the inconsistent bench warmer who has not
completely bounced back from a gruesome knee injury? The Celtics are counting
on the former and think Allen is finally healthy enough to be reliable on the
floor. The departure of Posey will create more playing time for Allen to find
his rhythm on the court, but whether he is dependable enough to earn those
minutes is yet to be seen.

他會是兩年前證明過給大家那個最不用被擔心的防守專家嗎？
還是因為膝蓋受傷上場時間不定的熱板凳機？
超賽當然打著前者的算盤，
TA已經完全健康並足夠依賴他在場上，
Posey的離去將帶給他更多的上場時間去找到場上節奏，
但他是不是足以信賴去贏得上場時間我們還等著看。

Eddie House: re-signed to 2-year contract
Grade: A-
Eddie House initially held out for more than a one-year deal but in the end
came in relatively inexpensive for a two-year contract. The sharpshooting
journeyman knocked down several key treys during the playoffs and is the only
legitimate back up to Ray Allen on offense. House may not be the best ball
handler on the team, but as long as he is consistent from downtown the
Celtics have a dangerous offensive weapon on their bench.

Patrick O'Bryant: signed to 2-year contract via free agency
Grade: B-
Patrick O'Bryant is a relative unknown in the NBA after riding the bench for
the Golden State Warriors during the last two seasons. O'Bryant struggled
under Don Nelson's system without consistent playing time and a defined role,
but the Celtics should find minutes for him behind foul-prone Kendrick
Perkins. Even though O'Bryant has yet to reach his potential as a former
ninth overall pick, assistant coach Clifford Ray has worked his magic with
underdeveloped big men in the past. O'Bryant could prove to be a bargain or
the Celtics could be begging P.J. Brown to come back again.

J.R. Giddens: 30th pick in 2008 NBA Draft; unsigned
Grade: B
The selection of J.R. Giddens came as a surprise to many who did not have the
swingman on their draft radar. But when Celtics personnel gushed about his
athleticism and defense, he seemed like a sensible addition in the wake of
Posey's departure. The problem, however, is that Giddens has yet to come to
terms and sign a contract. If all goes as the Celtics hope, Giddens will suit
up this season and provide to provide a spark off the bench. But if Giddens
continues to hold out, the Celtics could be regretting their only first round
pick.

球隊選秀需要搖擺人卻讓他跌到這裡是有點意外的，
但當超賽說出他的活動力及防守能力後，
他好像是要來填補Posey離去的空缺，
問題是他真的已經可以簽約了嗎？
如果完全正如超賽所望的，
他應該穿上制服並在板凳席上帶來火花，
如果他一直在名單外，
超賽就該為他們唯一的第一輪選秀感到懊悔。

Bill Walker: obtained draft rights from Washington Wizards in exchange for
cash; unsigned
Grade: C
The Celtics took a risk when they acquired Bill Walker, but it was a risk
they could afford to take. Walker underwent arthroscopic right knee surgery
in early July to repair the injury which dropped his draft stock to the 47th
pick. It is unclear what the Celtics will decide to do with the forward and
have several options to explore. They could assign him to the D-League as
they did with Gabe Pruitt last season, develop him in an organization
overseas, or keep him in Boston and hope he can keep up with his
championship-winning teammates. The Celtics will have to assess Walker's
　surgery before they can assess his chances in the NBA.

Semih Erden: 60th pick in 2008 NBA Draft; unsigned
Grade: INC
Celtics GM Danny Ainge did not have the highest hopes for the long-term
potential of a 60th pick. Erden is a standout in Turkey and that is where he
may stay for now. Even though he most likely will not make an impact on the
Celtics short term plans, the 20-year-old could develop into a big man worth
bringing back to Boston in years to come.

Business to Be Done: The Celtics only have three open spots on next season's
roster and have to be smart with their limited space. There are several
issues to be addressed before the Cs can round out their team and the free
agent market is getting thinner by the day.

該做的功課：
超賽在下季的輪替名單只剩三個，
要更加聰明利用有限的空間，
在超賽完成他們的球隊前還有幾個課題被提出，
還有自由球員的市場大魚日益變少了。

How many of the three draft picks will they sign, if any?
Will P.J. Brown and Sam Cassell return? If not, the Celtics could go after
another veteran point guard to help Rajon Rondo and Gabe Pruitt's development
or find another big man in case O'Bryant does not pan out.
Who is coming off the bench for Paul Pierce? If Giddens comes to terms he can
be given that role, but if he does not sign a deal the Celtics will be left
with a hole at the three spot.
Total Off Season Grade: B-
With the exception of re-signing Eddie House for relatively short money,
there is still work to be done to rebuild their championship-winning bench.

三個選秀中會簽約幾個，有嗎？
布朗大叔跟外星人下季還會打嗎？
如果沒有的話，
超賽得再找個經驗豐富的控衛幫軟豆還有Pruitt的發展，
還要找一個長人以防O'Bryant不能用，
誰能夠當PP的替補？
如果Giddens來到的話將可以解決這個問題，
但如果超賽不跟他簽約的話將帶來給三號位置一個漏洞，
季末總評：B-
除了花在房子身上的一些錢，
重新打造冠軍隊的板凳還有功課要做。
