The Boston Celtics shut down the Orlando Magic almost completely in the
second quarter Wednesday, then held on and strengthened their lead in the
Eastern Conference with an 86-77 Christmas Day victory.
Ray Allen led five Celtics in double figures and Rajon Rondo came two assists
short of a triple-double for the Celtics, who won for the 14th time in 15
games to move two games ahead of the Magic in the East.
Vince Carter scored a game-high 27 for the Magic, but they shot only 33
percent and made only five of 26 threes.
The Celtics (23-5) had lost a seven-game playoff series to the Magic last
spring and had lost to them again in Boston on Nov. 20.
"This was definitely a benchmark game for us because we have talked about
this game for a long time," said Allen, who turned back a late Magic rally
with a basket and two free throws. "We did what we had to do and took care of
the game."
What they had to do was play defense, especially against Dwight Howard, who
scored only five points and committed seven turnovers. The Celtics denied
Howard the ball all day, and the Magic (22-8) didn't generate enough around
him.
"We played him one-on-one," said Boston coach Doc Rivers. "We are lucky
enough to have Kendrick Perkins, Rasheed Wallace and Glen Davis. They are
very good one-on-one defenders, and we don't do anything special against
Dwight."
Seventeen of Howard's 20 rebounds came on the defensive end, but the Celtics
still won the battle of the boards, 48-43.
The Magic scored only 27 points in the first half, matching the franchise low
for a first half set on Jan. 24, 2005 at Houston. Their eight-point second
quarter was only one point over the franchise low of 7, set at Detroit on
Feb. 7, 1996.
"We've had a pretty persistent problem with our offense against them, and
that is that we just do not sustain good offensive play throughout the game,"
said Magic coach Stan Van Gundy. "They're a great defensive team, but there
are ways we can get good shots. We know it, but we just won't play that way
for long enough stretches."
A long jump shot by Ryan Anderson gave the Magic a 25-20 lead with 7:52 left
in the second quarter, but they managed only two points in the rest of the
half, missing 13 of 14 shots while turning the ball over four times.
A 3-pointer by Brian Scalabrine stretched Boston's lead to 14 in the third
quarter before the Magic started coming back.
It was not a game with a lot of visual appeal.
"It wasn't the prettiest ball, I can tell you that. I thought both teams
played tremendous defense," Rivers said.
"A frustrating day, very frustrating," said Van Gundy. "Eighteen turnovers.
They had 21, not exactly a pretty NBA basketball game. We battled back, but
when you dig yourself that big a hole, now you have to be perfect at both
ends, and we just weren't."
There were long stretches when Rondo (17 points, 13 rebounds, eight assists)
was the only player doing anything offensively. He also had eight turnovers.
"I tried to be aggressive," he said. "They picked up a couple of charges on
me, but Doc told me to keep attacking, which I did. I tried to stay
aggressive and get to the bonus."
Rondo missed a layup in the third quarter, ran down the rebound and drew a
foul.
Then after the Magic missed four shots with a chance to close the gap to six
midway through the fourth quarter, Rondo got the rebound and started a break
that ended on Tony Allen's dunk after a behind-the-back pass by Rondo.
The Magic worked the lead down to three on Rashard Lewis' 3-pointer with 1:02
left. But Ray Allen answered with a jumper when J.J. Redick got lost on a
pick, and after Lewis missed a three on the other end, two Ray Allen free
throws put Boston back up, 82-75, with only 30.9 seconds left.
The Celtics played for the first time all season without Paul Pierce, their
leading scorer, who is out with a right knee infection.
Tony Allen, starting for the first time, scored 16 points in 21 minutes.
