It is the eternal NBA question: Do you intentionally foul when your team is
up three with less than 10 seconds left to play?

Many coaches don't like to leave their fates to chance, particularly when NBA
players are capable of making such tremendous plays.

But Golden State coach Don Nelson has always been unconventional, choosing to
foul Boston's Ray Allen, the league's second-best free throw shooter, with
4.4 seconds left to play and the Warriors holding a three-point lead. The
gamble paid off, in part because Allen tried his own unconventional play,
enabling the Warriors to earn their second consecutive victory, a 103-99
come-from-behind decision over the Celtics at Oracle Arena.

"I've never been beaten doing it," Nelson said. "I've been tied once or
twice, but I can't remember ever losing a game by doing that. The funniest
things happen when you do that. The craziest things have happened. But you
just have to take your chances."

After beating the Phoenix Suns on Saturday, it was Golden State's first set
of back-to-back victories since Nov. 20 and 24, their only two-game win
streak of the season.

By contrast, Boston, which lost to the Clippers on Sunday night, suffered its
first two-game losing steak since Nov. 13-14. That was the Celtics' only
losing streak of the season.

The Celtics have been on the road since Dec. 23, when Doc Rivers, who has a
home in Orlando, took his team there two days before a Christmas Day game
against the Magic to give them a chance to spend some holiday time with their
families.

After Boston (23-7) jumped ahead by 18 points, either relaxation or fatigue
allowed the Warriors to erase the deficit in the span on one quarter, scoring
35 second-quarter points, the most any team has scored against the Celtics in
a quarter this season.

It happened in part because the Warriors switched reserve guard C.J. Watson
onto Allen, who scored 13 first-quarter points. Watson started overloading
the passing lanes and ended up with six steals in the quarter, a franchise
record and two steals shy of Fat Lever's NBA record of eight in a quarter.

That enabled the Warriors to get out and run, and once they gained some
confidence there was little that could stop them -- the Celtics having a
streak of 88 games in a row snapped in which they led by at least 16 points.

Monta Ellis had his third straight game of at least 30 points, scoring 37 on
15-for-26 shooting. Anthony Randolph had 18 points and nine rebounds, all of
which offset a 30-point, 15-assist night by Boston point guard Rajon Rondo.
Allen finished with 24.

The Warriors (9-21) have been saying for the better part of a month that they
need their centers back in order to be successful.

Turns out they were right.

With both Andris Biedrins and Ronny Turiaf available for the first time since
Oct. 30, the Warriors defeated the Celtics for the sixth consecutive time at
home.

They were not dominated inside. They were not beaten badly on the boards.
They held Kevin Garnett to 16 points and nine rebounds, a marginal factor.
And they limited the Celtics, playing without Paul Pierce, to 13 points less
than their opponents normally score.

Even though Biedrins had only four rebounds and Turiaf had five points and
five rebounds, it looked like an altogether different Warriors team.

"It is just energy, their presence, certain little things that they do,"
Warriors guard Anthony Morrow said. "I can't even explain all of them, but
just little things that they do during the game open a lot of things up."

After the Warriors got back into the game, neither team was able to pull
away, the Celtics answering the Warriors big shot for big shot.

Turiaf put the Warriors ahead 101-96, but Garnett got Boston to 101-98. When
Boston got the ball with 5.3 seconds remaining, Nelson ordered the Warriors
to foul Allen immediately.

He could have made both free throws, taken the chance that Golden State would
miss their free throws and then go for a win or the tie.

Instead, Allen made the first and intentionally missed the second. Only, his
shot, a two-handed throw at the backboard, never hit the rim, which it must
do in order for the Celtics to be able to rebound.

The officials awarded the ball to Golden State, Ellis made both foul shots
and the Warriors won yet again.

NOTE: Boston forward Glen Davis sprained his ankle in the fourth quarter and
did not return to the game.
