PHILADELPHIA — If the NBA does in fact have a lockout in 2011-12, Shaquille
O'Neal won't have to make sure his passport is current.
A report earlier this week indicated that O'Neal would consider playing in
Turkey if the league shuts down over a labor dispute.
But O'Neal told CSNNE.com on Wednesday that he does not have any plans to play
overseas.
"If it's a lockout, a major lockout, I'll put one of my 3 1/2 degrees to work,"
he said.
While O'Neal has made several millions in salary alone, he has also accumulated
a diverse portfolio of companies since coming into the NBA nearly two decades
ago.
He recalls former Los Angeles Laker great Magic Johnson steering him in that
direction.
"He pulled me to the side, and said . . . 'You need to start owning [things],'
" O'Neal recalled.
Gyms, car washes, restaurants, movie theaters and a line of shoes are just some
of the companies O'Neal owns, and that doesn't factor in what he brings in via
endorsements.
"I'm cool," he said. "It might not be $20 or $30 [million], what I'm used to.
I'm over that stage in my life."
As far as what his role will be in this current collective bargaining session,
O'Neal said he doesn't plan to be an active participant.
"It's not really my time to be stepping up and voicing my opinion," O'Neal
said. "The other guys are going to have to do it. When it was my time, I
stepped up. There were guys ahead of me, and I was right behind them. It ain't
my time, and it ain't my league. So LeBron [James], [Dwyane Wade] and all those
guys are going to have to step up, for their league. Dwight Howard, all those
people have to step up for the league. I'm on my way out."
Because of the potential lockout, O'Neal said this season has even more meaning
for him and his veteran teammates.
"My theme this year is 1825," O'Neal said.
The '18' stands for Banner 18 which is what the C's are gunning for this season.
The '2' stands for a second title for the Big Three and head coach Doc Rivers.
And the '5' stands for what would be a fifth title for O'Neal.
"That's the only thing we're thinking about," O'Neal said.
