The Celtics had until tonight to waive Von Wafer and Delonte West, and
instead let the deadline pass, guaranteeing the minimum contracts of both
players for the rest of the year.
Wafer, unaware that he had just dodged a major bullet, was understandably
thrilled.
“That’s definitely a relief,” said Wafer, a skilled shooter who has won a
job on this team thanks to his defense as well as his scoring. “I’m really
happy, man, just blessed.”
After coming off the bench with 10 points during Monday night’s win over
Minnesota, Wafer noted that he would never have made it this far if he hadn’
t bought into Doc Rivers’ defensive principles.
Last night he admitted that the Celtics’ environment, with so many strong
personalities and influences setting the standard, has made an enormous
difference.
“I think that counts for a lot,” he said. “You see guys doing things the
right way, and it just becomes part of your mentality.”
Of the impending deadline, Wafer added, “I never really thought about it. I
just wanted to keep playing.”
