Doc Rivers took a lot of people by surprise Wednesday night with the postgame
announcement he’s leaning heavily toward returning to coach the Celtics
[team stats] for at least another year.

His affinity for the organization — driven home by the comment “I’m a
Celtic” — may even indicate a longer commitment.

A league source has confirmed that the team is close to finalizing a contract
extension for Rivers, reportedly for three years.

A press conference had already been scheduled for this morning, when Danny
Ainge will hold a season-ending talk with the media. A new contract could be
one of the topics.

With Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen also signed through next year, and Paul
Pierce [stats] the season after that, Rivers’ inclinations are critical.

三巨頭明年都還在，因此Doc的去留對他們來說很關鍵


“Doc is very important, for me,” said Pierce. “We’re trying to move
forward, try to get back next year to win a championship, and he’s one of
the main pieces.

Rivers, after hearing all of that break-up-the-Lakers talk since the two-time
defending champs were swept by Dallas, insisted enough pieces still exist to
remain relevant, with a few necessary additions.

“I don’t believe this team is done,” he said. “After listening to the
Lakers being broken up, then I’m sure (people think) that we all are done.
We have to add some people. Other than that, I love the people in that locker
room.”
