Spurs assistant Brett Brown as Celtics head coach “may be imminent”
http://ppt.cc/8Ds-
The Celtics might be one step closer to finding a replacement for Doc Rivers.
From Michael Levin at the SB Nation Sixers blog Liberty Ballers:
A source close to the Spurs organization has informed Liberty Ballers that
the Boston Celtics and Brett Brown have mutual interest, and a signing may be
imminent.
Brown had met with San Antonio GM R.C. Buford last night to weigh his
options, and while it was originally thought that Philadelphia was topping
the list, it appears that the Maine native prefers to return to New England
to replace Doc Rivers for Danny Ainge’s tanking Celtics.
Several news outlets actually reported that Brown and the Sixers had come to
an agreement on Draft Night, but clearly that wasn’t the case.
From where I stand, this would be an excellent signing for Boston. Brown has
shown a lot of interest in coaching the Cs. Perhaps more importantly, he has
shown a lot of interest in coaching the team despite all of the recent roster
moves that have essentially ensured that next year’s focus will be getting a
solid lottery pick. It seems to me that, with a rebuilding team, Boston needs
three things from a coach.
1. Dedication to the rebuilding cause.
2. Skill in player development.
3. Willingness to work for cheap(ish, because it’s not like any
head coach will be making minimum wage).
Brown does not have any NBA head coaching experience, but he was the head
coach of the Australian national team, and more importantly, he has worked
under Gregg Popovich since 2003. His rumored interest in Boston is very
encouraging, and while I don’t know what his history of player development
is like, it’s a safe bet that Danny Ainge does and will take that into
consideration before hiring him. And, of course, since Brown has not been a
head coach in the NBA before, he wouldn’t carry the kind of price tag that
coaches like George Karl and Lionel Hollins would command.
If Brown doesn’t pan out, another potential candidate — as reported
yesterday by the Globe’s Baxter Holmes — is Jay Larranaga.
One potential candidate the Celtics are taking a hard look at is assistant
Jay Larranaga, whom Doc Rivers is interested in taking with him to round out
his coaching staff with the Los Angeles Clippers, a league source said.
We will, of course, keep you updated as the search continues.
