Bo Larsen (or is it just Larsen?) is an experienced referee who has taken
part in a number of tournaments, including international games (but not full
internationals): he missed out on the Euro-2004 in Portugal and also the 2006
World Cup in Germany, and then Euro-2008 in Austria / Switzerland.
Nevertheless, Bo Larsen is a 'UEFA Elite Category` referee. That could
explain why he was the arbiter in the UEFA Super Cup game between Manchester
United and Zenit Saint Petersburg in August.

Bo Larsen is considered an experienced and respected referee who does not
like reaching to his pocket to show red or yellow cards. He`s averse also to
awarding penalties (Steven Gerrard, take note): in over 50 matches he sent
off only six players. Hilariously, 4 of them were in the same match: at the
2004 Olympic Games group match between Paraguay and Italy. Of the mere 9
penalties he has awarded in his career, 4 were in that match.

Bo Larson officiated the group stage game earlier this season between Atlé
tico and Liverpool when he harshly ruled out two goals for offside.
Subsequent replays suggested that he`d got both call wrong. At least he was
unfair on both sides.

All in all, Chelsea can consider that they have drawn one of Europe`s better
referees for Wednesday`s game. Bo Larsen is not a referee who draws attention
to himself. He`s clearly no Anders Frisk, preferring to encourage the flow of
the game. Like all referees, he tends to award against the away team and in
favour of the home side, and with the atmosphere likely to be vibrant, let`s
hope that he isn`t unduly intimidated by the braying from the Kop.
